The Apple, and The Ataraxy

Part 1: Curio

Part 1: Curio

Subconsciously, Adam knew he was emotionally and mentally perturbed; his anxiety attacks were frequent, and debilitating. All he wanted was to feel, simply, at peace.

Adam encountered an apple, a curio which promised an escape. He took a bite.

What could go wrong?

Part 2: Static Anxiety

Part 2: Static Anxiety

A bite from the apple propelled Adam into a blissful reality, where his anxious thoughts were muted. However, when the blissful reality receded, he noticed that his hand shook even when he attempted to be still.

Unbeknownst to others, who saw him as composed, Adam had great difficulty tempering the velocity of his shuffling thoughts. Adam couldn't comprehend his state, as the link connecting his mind and body was severed.

But the euphoria was too alluring. And so, he took another bite.

Part 3: Cycle of Pleasure

Part 3: Cycle of Pleasure

The apple also presented pleasure from external sources: He would please others to see them happy. Their happiness must mean he did something right, he thought. "Therefore, I should feel good about myself". He even noticed that his anxious and paranoid feelings would temporarily recede as a result. Just keep people-pleasing...

At some point, however, Adam realized he was trapped in a cycle of pleasure, in which he did not benefit. These pleasures were never-lasting, which was distressing, and therefore anxiety-inducing.

Adam failed to reach a genuinely peaceful mental space.

Part 4: Serenity In Motion

Part 4: Serenity In Motion

Movement was a surprising treatment to anxious feelings, albeit temporary. In particular, Adam found some solace watching the gentle blue waves glide across the soft sand. The motion of the waves facilitated a longing mental serenity.

Adam deemed this respite better than the apple.

Part 5: Natural (Solitude)

Part 5: Natural (Solitude)

One Saturday, Adam walked alone through the park, where he adored the flora and fauna. The outdoor air flowed through his body. In solitude, Adam could go at his own pace, at which, he clearly and carefully processed his thoughts, attempting to ponder over the source of his anxieties.

While Adam was frustrated that this moment had to end, he observed that he could reach a serene mental space on his own. Knowing that brought him peace.
